isvarname — Return true when text is a valid MATLAB variable name.
isvarname(S) returns a logical scalar indicating whether text is a valid MATLAB variable name: nonempty, starts with a letter, is at most namelengthmax characters, contains only letters, digits, and underscores after the first character, and is not a MATLAB keyword.
Syntax
tf = isvarname(S)Inputs
| Name | Type | Required | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
A | Any | Yes | — | Value to validate. |
Returns
| Name | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
tf | LogicalArray | Validation result. |
How isvarname works
- Returns a normal logical value and does not mutate inputs.
- Accepts MATLAB text representations supported by RunMat.
- Rejects names that start with underscores or digits, MATLAB keywords such as
forandend, and names longer thannamelengthmaxcharacters.
Example
Basic use
isvarname(x)Expected output:
Result depends on input value.Using isvarname with coding agents
Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how isvarname changes the result.
Run a small isvarname example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.
