vartype — Create a table variable type selector.

vartype(type) creates a selector with a Type property for table variable type selection workflows.

Syntax

B = tabularBuiltin(A, ...)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
AAnyYes—Input value.
argsAnyVariadic—Name-value options or conversion arguments.

Returns

NameTypeDescription
outAnyResult value.

Errors

IdentifierWhenMessage
RunMat:table:InvalidArgumentArguments or table metadata are invalid.table: invalid argument
RunMat:table:InvalidIndexTable indexing is invalid.table: invalid index
RunMat:table:InvalidVariableA table variable name or value is invalid.table: invalid variable
RunMat:readtable:IOErrorreadtable cannot open or read the requested file.readtable: file read failed
RunMat:readtable:UnsupportedFileTypereadtable receives a file type outside the text or spreadsheet import backends.readtable: unsupported file type

How vartype works

  • type must be a string scalar or character row vector.
  • The selector can be used as a table or timetable variable subscript.
  • Supported categories include numeric, logical, string, cell, categorical, datetime, duration, integer, and all.
  • The text selector "integer" selects integer variables; it is not an integer-valued argument. Numeric and provider-resident values are rejected before provider access.

Example

Select numeric variables

T(:, vartype('numeric'))

Expected output:

Table containing numeric variables

Using vartype with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how vartype changes the result.

Run a small vartype example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

Open-source implementation

Unlike proprietary runtimes, every RunMat function is open-source. Read exactly how vartype is executed, line by line, in Rust.

About RunMat

RunMat is an open-source runtime that executes MATLAB-syntax code blazing on any GPU. It is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.

  • RunMat automatically optimizes your math for GPU execution on Apple, Nvidia, and AMD hardware. No code changes needed. Simulations that took hours now take minutes.
  • Start running code in seconds. RunMat runs in the browser, on the desktop, or from the CLI. No license server, no IT ticket.
