ecdf — Compute or plot empirical distribution functions.
ecdf(y) computes the empirical cumulative distribution function for numeric sample data. With no requested outputs it plots the empirical function; with outputs it returns column vectors for function values, evaluation points, and confidence bounds.
Syntax
[f, x] = ecdf(y)
[f, x] = ecdf(y, Name, Value)
[f, x, flo, fup] = ecdf(___)
ecdf(y)
ecdf(y, Name, Value)
ecdf(ax, y)
ecdf(ax, y, Name, Value)Inputs
| Name | Type | Required | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
y | Any | Yes | — | Sample data vector. |
nameValuePairs | Any | Variadic | — | Function, Censoring, Frequency, Alpha, and Bounds options. |
ax | AxesHandle | Yes | — | Target axes handle. |
Returns
| Name | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
f | NumericArray | Empirical function values. |
x | NumericArray | Evaluation points. |
flo | NumericArray | Lower confidence bounds. |
fup | NumericArray | Upper confidence bounds. |
Returned values from ecdf depend on how many outputs the caller requests.
Errors
| Identifier | When | Message |
|---|---|---|
RunMat:ecdf:InvalidArgument | Inputs, name-value options, censoring, frequency, or alpha values are malformed. | ecdf: invalid argument |
RunMat:ecdf:Unsupported | A documented but not yet implemented interval or double-censored form is requested. | ecdf: unsupported form |
RunMat:ecdf:Internal | RunMat cannot construct ECDF outputs or plots. | ecdf: internal error |
Examples
Compute an empirical CDF
[f,x] = ecdf([3;1;2;2])Expected output:
f = [0; 0.25; 0.75; 1]
x = [1; 1; 2; 3]Compute a survivor function with frequencies
[s,x] = ecdf([1;2;3], "Frequency", [2;1;1], "Function", "survivor")Plot an empirical CDF
ecdf(randn(100,1))Using ecdf with coding agents
Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how ecdf changes the result.
Run a small ecdf example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

About RunMat
RunMat is an open-source runtime that executes MATLAB-syntax code blazing on any GPU. It is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.
- RunMat automatically optimizes your math for GPU execution on Apple, Nvidia, and AMD hardware. No code changes needed. Simulations that took hours now take minutes.
- Start running code in seconds. RunMat runs in the browser, on the desktop, or from the CLI. No license server, no IT ticket.
