tinv — Evaluate the inverse Student's t cumulative distribution function.
tinv(p,nu) returns the Student's t quantile for probability p and degrees of freedom nu.
Syntax
x = tinv(p, nu)Inputs
| Name | Type | Required | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
p | Any | Yes | — | Probability value. |
nu | Any | Yes | — | Degrees of freedom parameter. |
Returns
| Name | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
y | NumericArray | Distribution function value. |
Errors
| Identifier | When | Message |
|---|---|---|
RunMat:tinv:InvalidArgument | Inputs are nonnumeric, sizes are incompatible, or too many arguments are supplied. | normal distribution: invalid argument |
RunMat:tinv:Internal | Internal tensor conversion or allocation fails. | normal distribution: internal error |
How tinv works
pandnumay be scalars or matching-size numeric arrays.- Scalar inputs broadcast over matching-size array inputs.
poutside[0,1]or nonpositivenuproducesNaNelementwise.p = 0andp = 1return infinite tails.
Example
95th percentile
x = tinv(0.95, 50)Using tinv with coding agents
Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how tinv changes the result.
Run a small tinv example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.
FAQ
How is tinv computed?⌄
RunMat solves against the Student's t CDF with a bounded bisection path, using symmetry around zero.

About RunMat
RunMat is an open-source runtime that executes MATLAB-syntax code blazing on any GPU. It is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.
- RunMat automatically optimizes your math for GPU execution on Apple, Nvidia, and AMD hardware. No code changes needed. Simulations that took hours now take minutes.
- Start running code in seconds. RunMat runs in the browser, on the desktop, or from the CLI. No license server, no IT ticket.
