trnd — Generate Student's t random numbers.

trnd(nu) generates Student's t random numbers with nu degrees of freedom. Size arguments can be supplied as separate dimensions or as a size vector.

Syntax

r = trnd(nu)
r = trnd(nu, sz)
r = trnd(nu, sz1, sz2, ...)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
nuAnyYesDegrees of freedom parameter.
szAnyVariadicOutput size arguments.

Returns

NameTypeDescription
rNumericArrayRandom sample array from the Student's t distribution.

Errors

IdentifierWhenMessage
RunMat:trnd:InvalidArgumentInput parameters or size arguments are missing, malformed, or incompatible.trnd: invalid argument
RunMat:trnd:InternalInternal tensor conversion or allocation fails.trnd: internal operation failed

How trnd works

  • nu must be a positive scalar or a positive array of degrees of freedom.
  • Scalar nu broadcasts over the requested output size.
  • Array nu requires the requested size to match the shape of nu.
  • nu = Inf generates standard normal random numbers.

Examples

Scalar sample

r = trnd(10)

Matrix sample

r = trnd(1, 5, 5)

Using trnd with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how trnd changes the result.

Run a small trnd example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

FAQ

How does RunMat generate trnd samples?

RunMat draws a standard normal variate and scales it by an independent chi-square variate generated through a gamma sampler.

Open-source implementation

Unlike proprietary runtimes, every RunMat function is open-source. Read exactly how trnd is executed, line by line, in Rust.

About RunMat

RunMat is an open-source runtime that executes MATLAB-syntax code blazing on any GPU. It is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.

  • RunMat automatically optimizes your math for GPU execution on Apple, Nvidia, and AMD hardware. No code changes needed. Simulations that took hours now take minutes.
  • Start running code in seconds. RunMat runs in the browser, on the desktop, or from the CLI. No license server, no IT ticket.
