gamrnd — Generate gamma-distributed random samples.

gamrnd(a,b) generates gamma random samples with shape parameter a and scale parameter b. Size-vector and dimension-list forms are supported.

Syntax

r = gamrnd(a, b)
r = gamrnd(a, b, sz)
r = gamrnd(a, b, sz1, sz2, ...)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
aAnyYes—First distribution parameter.
bAnyYes—Second distribution parameter.
szAnyVariadic—Output size arguments.

Returns

NameTypeDescription
rNumericArrayRandom sample array.

Errors

IdentifierWhenMessage
RunMat:gamrnd:InvalidArgumentInput parameters or size arguments are missing, malformed, or incompatible.distribution random: invalid argument
RunMat:gamrnd:InternalInternal tensor conversion, allocation, or RNG state access fails.distribution random: internal error

How gamrnd works

  • a and b support scalar expansion and matching array shapes.
  • Without explicit size arguments, the output shape is the scalar-expanded parameter shape.
  • With explicit size arguments, nonscalar parameters must match the requested shape.
  • a must be nonnegative and b must be positive.
  • MATLAB-compatible mode accepts documented single and double parameters and size controls. Native typed-integer parameters or dimensions are separately declared RunMat extensions; admitted numerical parameters must be exactly representable at the binary64 sampling boundary.
  • Automatic internal residency may gather transparently. Documented explicit floating gpuArray input preserves its provider ownership and output residency.

Example

Generate a 2-by-3 gamma sample array

r = gamrnd(3,7,2,3)

Using gamrnd with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how gamrnd changes the result.

Run a small gamrnd example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

FAQ

Which RNG does gamrnd use?⌄

It uses RunMat's shared deterministic RNG state, so rng('default') resets subsequent gamrnd output.
