missing — Create missing string scalars or arrays.
missing creates string arrays filled with RunMat's canonical MATLAB missing string sentinel, <missing>.
Syntax
missing
missing(sz)Inputs
| Name | Type | Required | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
args | Any | Variadic | — | Size, method, dimension, or option arguments. |
Returns
| Name | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
B | Any | Result value. |
Errors
| Identifier | When | Message |
|---|---|---|
RunMat:missing:InvalidArgument | Arguments do not match a supported missing-value syntax. | missing-value builtin: invalid argument |
RunMat:missing:UnsupportedType | The input type has no missing-value representation in RunMat. | missing-value builtin: unsupported input type |
RunMat:missing:InternalError | Internal shape or table materialization fails. | missing-value builtin: internal error |
How missing works
missingreturns a 1-by-1 missing string scalar.missing(n)returns an n-by-n missing string array.missing(m, n, ...)andmissing(sz)accept nonnegative integer size arguments.- The result uses
StringArraystorage and displays each element as<missing>.
Example
Create missing strings
S = missing(1, 3)Expected output:
S = 1x3 string array
<missing> <missing> <missing>Using missing with coding agents
Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how missing changes the result.
Run a small missing example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

About RunMat
RunMat is an open-source runtime that executes MATLAB-syntax code blazing on any GPU. It is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.
- RunMat automatically optimizes your math for GPU execution on Apple, Nvidia, and AMD hardware. No code changes needed. Simulations that took hours now take minutes.
- Start running code in seconds. RunMat runs in the browser, on the desktop, or from the CLI. No license server, no IT ticket.
