missing — Create missing string scalars or arrays.

missing creates a scalar containing RunMat's canonical MATLAB missing string sentinel, <missing>. The documented MATLAB function accepts no input arguments.

Syntax

missing
missing(sz)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
argsAnyVariadic—Size, method, dimension, or option arguments.

Returns

NameTypeDescription
BAnyResult value.

Errors

IdentifierWhenMessage
RunMat:missing:InvalidArgumentArguments do not match a supported missing-value syntax.missing-value builtin: invalid argument
RunMat:missing:UnsupportedTypeThe input type has no missing-value representation in RunMat.missing-value builtin: unsupported input type
RunMat:missing:InternalErrorInternal shape or table materialization fails.missing-value builtin: internal error

How missing works

  • missing returns a 1-by-1 missing string scalar.
  • missing(n), missing(m,n,...), and missing(sz) are gated RunMat conveniences rather than documented MATLAB forms.
  • RunMat extension size controls accept all eight integer classes and are checked exactly against nonnegative host allocation limits.
  • MATLAB-compatible mode rejects any supplied argument before gathering or provider lookup.
  • The result uses StringArray storage and displays each element as <missing>.

Example

Create a missing scalar

S = missing

Expected output:

S = <missing>

Using missing with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how missing changes the result.

Run a small missing example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

Open-source implementation

Unlike proprietary runtimes, every RunMat function is open-source. Read exactly how missing is executed, line by line, in Rust.

About RunMat

RunMat is an open-source runtime that executes MATLAB-syntax code blazing on any GPU. It is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.

  • RunMat automatically optimizes your math for GPU execution on Apple, Nvidia, and AMD hardware. No code changes needed. Simulations that took hours now take minutes.
  • Start running code in seconds. RunMat runs in the browser, on the desktop, or from the CLI. No license server, no IT ticket.
