standardizeMissing — Replace user-specified missing indicators with canonical missing values.

standardizeMissing(A, indicators) replaces user-defined sentinel values with the missing representation appropriate for each input variable. Floating numeric matches become NaN, text matches become the missing string sentinel, and table or container inputs are processed recursively. Integer indicators are documented when they identify values in supported floating data. A direct native-integer array has no standard missing value, so RunMat mode treats it as an exact class-preserving no-op; that additional input form is rejected in MATLAB-compatible mode.

Syntax

B = standardizeMissing(A, indicators)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
AAnyYes—Input value.
argsAnyVariadic—Method, dimension, or option arguments.

Returns

BAnyResult value.

Errors

IdentifierWhenMessage
RunMat:missing:InvalidArgumentArguments do not match a supported missing-value syntax.missing-value builtin: invalid argument
RunMat:missing:UnsupportedTypeThe input type has no missing-value representation in RunMat.missing-value builtin: unsupported input type
RunMat:missing:InternalErrorInternal shape or table materialization fails.missing-value builtin: internal error

How standardizeMissing works

  • Numeric arrays accept scalar or array indicators; NaN indicators match existing NaNs.
  • String arrays and character-array rows accept text indicators and are converted to the missing string sentinel.
  • Cell arrays and tables are processed recursively.
  • All eight integer classes can be used as numeric indicators for supported floating data without enabling RunMat extensions.
  • Integer variables inside a table retain their native class and values because standard integer classes have no canonical missing element.
  • Passing a native integer array directly as A is a named RunMat extension. It returns the original typed storage unchanged and is rejected in MATLAB-compatible mode before any resident input is gathered.

Example

Convert sentinel values to NaN

B = standardizeMissing([-99 2 4], -99)

Expected output:

B = [NaN 2 4]

Using standardizeMissing with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how standardizeMissing changes the result.

Run a small standardizeMissing example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.
