getAttribute — Read an HTML attribute from htmlTree objects.

getAttribute(tree, attr) returns the value of an HTML attribute from a scalar RunMat htmlTree object or from each object in a cell array of htmlTree objects.

Syntax

str = getAttribute(tree, attr)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
treeAnyYes—htmlTree object or cell array of htmlTree objects.
attrStringScalarYes—Attribute name.

Returns

NameTypeDescription
strAnyExtracted text.

Errors

IdentifierWhenMessage
RunMat:html:InvalidInputInputs are not a supported htmlTree or extractHTMLText form.HTML Text Analytics helper received invalid input

How getAttribute works

  • tree must be a scalar RunMat htmlTree object or a cell array of htmlTree objects, such as the output of findElement.
  • attr must be a nonempty string scalar or character vector.
  • Attribute names are normalized to lowercase and matched against the parser's lowercase attribute map.
  • A scalar htmlTree input returns a string scalar.
  • A cell array of htmlTree objects returns a string array with the same shape unless there is only one cell element.
  • If the requested attribute is absent, RunMat returns <missing> for that element.
  • Full MATLAB missing-string scalar representation for htmlTree attributes remains tied to broader missing/object-array compatibility work.

GPU memory and residency

getAttribute reads host-resident HTML metadata and has no provider kernel.

Examples

Read Link Attributes

tree = htmlTree("<a href='/home'>Home</a>");
href = getAttribute(tree, "href")

Expected output:

href = "/home"

Read Attributes From Matches

tree = htmlTree("<div><a href='/home'>Home</a><a>Docs</a></div>");
links = findElement(tree, "a");
hrefs = getAttribute(links, "href")

Expected output:

hrefs = ["/home"; "<missing>"]

Using getAttribute with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how getAttribute changes the result.

Run a small getAttribute example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

FAQ

What does RunMat return for a missing attribute?⌄

RunMat returns the string <missing> for that element. A first-class MATLAB missing-string scalar for this object path remains tracked with broader missing/object compatibility work.

Does getAttribute execute on the GPU?⌄

No. Attribute lookup is host HTML metadata access and has no runmat-accelerate provider path.
