native2unicode — Decode native byte values into Unicode text.

native2unicode(bytes, encoding) range-checks a numeric byte vector and decodes it to a host character vector using UTF-8 by default.

Syntax

text = native2unicode(bytes, encoding)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
bytesNumericArrayYes—Numeric byte vector with values in the range 0 through 255.
encodingStringScalarNo"UTF-8"Source character encoding.

Returns

NameTypeDescription
outAnyOutput value.

How native2unicode works

  • All eight integer classes are accepted, but every element must be exactly within 0 through 255; values are never clamped or converted through binary64.
  • ASCII-width decoding preserves the input row or column vector shape, and character or string input passes through unchanged.
  • Unsupported encoding names and explicit gpuArray inputs reject.

Example

Using native2unicode with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how native2unicode changes the result.

Run a small native2unicode example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

About RunMat

RunMat is an open-source runtime that executes MATLAB-syntax code blazing on any GPU. It is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.

  • RunMat automatically optimizes your math for GPU execution on Apple, Nvidia, and AMD hardware. No code changes needed. Simulations that took hours now take minutes.
  • Start running code in seconds. RunMat runs in the browser, on the desktop, or from the CLI. No license server, no IT ticket.
