stopWords — Return common stop words for supported Text Analytics languages.

stopWords returns a column string array of common stop words. stopWords('Language', language) selects English ('en'), Japanese ('ja'), German ('de'), or Korean ('ko').

Syntax

words = stopWords
words = stopWords('Language', language)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
NameStringScalarYesLanguageLanguage option name.
languageStringScalarYesenStop word language: en, ja, de, or ko.

Returns

NameTypeDescription
wordsAnyStop word list.

Errors

How stopWords works

  • stopWords with no inputs returns the English stop-word list.
  • stopWords('Language', language) accepts scalar string or character-vector option values.
  • The supported language codes are en, ja, de, and ko, matching the Text Analytics Toolbox language set for this function.
  • The output is a string column vector with shape N x 1.
  • RunMat provides compatibility stop-word lists for the documented languages. The list contents cover common function use such as building removal sets for text preprocessing; exact release-to-release MathWorks vocabulary identity is not guaranteed.
  • removeStopWords consumes these lists for lightweight RunMat tokenizedDocument objects; custom token deletion remains part of the broader Text Analytics object surface.

GPU memory and residency

stopWords returns host-resident strings and has no provider kernel.

Examples

Get English Stop Words

words = stopWords

Expected output:

words = N×1 string
    "a"
    "about"
    "above"
    ...

Get German Stop Words

words = stopWords('Language','de')

Expected output:

words = N×1 string
    "ab"
    "aber"
    "alle"
    ...

Use Stop Words In A Custom Filter

words = stopWords;
custom = [words; "runmat"; "matlab"]

Expected output:

`custom` is a string column vector suitable for text-preprocessing workflows.

Using stopWords with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how stopWords changes the result.

Run a small stopWords example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

FAQ

Which language codes are accepted?⌄

en, ja, de, and ko are accepted. Other language codes raise RunMat:stopWords:InvalidInput.

Is this tied to tokenizedDocument?⌄

stopWords is a standalone list function, and removeStopWords uses the same lists for tokenized-document filtering.

Does stopWords execute on the GPU?⌄

No. It returns host string metadata, so no runmat-accelerate provider path is involved.
