fileattrib — Return filesystem attribute metadata for a path.

Return filesystem attribute metadata for a path.

Syntax

[status, attributes] = fileattrib(path)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
inputAnyYesInput argument.

Returns

NameTypeDescription
statusNumericScalar1 when attributes were read, otherwise 0.
attributesAnyAttribute struct or diagnostic struct.

Returned values from fileattrib depend on how many outputs the caller requests.

How fileattrib works

  • Reads file metadata and returns status plus an attribute struct containing Name, hidden, directory, and user/group/other permission flags.
  • Supports common writable flag mutation with +w and -w through the active filesystem provider.
  • Accepts read flags as no-op compatibility forms and rejects unsupported attribute flags explicitly.

Using fileattrib with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how fileattrib changes the result.

Run a small fileattrib example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.
