winqueryreg — Query values from the Windows registry when running on Windows.
winqueryreg reads a named value or lists value names from the Windows registry.
Syntax
value = winqueryreg(root, key, valuename)Inputs
| Name | Type | Required | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
input1 | Any | Yes | — | First input argument. |
input2 | Any | Yes | — | Second input argument. |
input3 | Any | No | — | Optional third input argument. |
Returns
| Name | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
value | Any | Result value. |
How winqueryreg works
- Registry root, key, and value-name selectors must be host string scalars or character row vectors.
REG_SZandREG_EXPAND_SZvalues return text.REG_DWORDvalues return an exactint32, including values whose bit pattern represents a negativeint32.- The leading
nameform lists value names under a key and returns them as text entries. - Native integer and resident numeric selectors reject before provider or registry access.
- The builtin reports that the Windows registry is unavailable when called on another operating system.
Using winqueryreg with coding agents
Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how winqueryreg changes the result.
Run a small winqueryreg example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.
FAQ
Why can a REG_DWORD result be negative?⌄
The 32-bit registry payload is returned with the documented int32 class, so its bit pattern is interpreted as a signed 32-bit integer.
