fileparts — Split a path into folder, base filename, and extension.
Split a textual path into folder, base filename, and extension without consulting the filesystem. Numeric and integer inputs are inapplicable. RunMat currently implements the scalar character-result subset; documented string-array and cell-array type/shape preservation remains incomplete.
Syntax
[folder, name, extension] = fileparts(filename)Inputs
| Name | Type | Required | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
input | Any | Yes | — | Input argument. |
Returns
| Name | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
folder | StringScalar | Folder component. |
name | StringScalar | Base filename component. |
extension | StringScalar | Extension component including the leading dot. |
Returned values from fileparts depend on how many outputs the caller requests.
How fileparts works
- Accepts a string scalar, scalar string array, or character row vector.
- Runs as a host-only lexical parser and does not require the path to exist.
- Nonscalar string arrays, cell arrays of character vectors, type/shape-preserving output, and complete dotfile/trailing-delimiter behavior remain implementation gaps.
Using fileparts with coding agents
Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how fileparts changes the result.
Run a small fileparts example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.
