rms — Compute root mean square values.

rms(X) computes sqrt(mean(abs(X).^2)) along the first non-singleton dimension. Dimension, vector-dimension, "all", "includenan", "omitnan", "includemissing", and "omitmissing" forms are supported.

Syntax

Y = rms(X)
Y = rms(X, dim)
Y = rms(X, dim, nanflag)

Inputs

NameTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
XAnyYes—Input data array.
dimAnyNo—Dimension, dimension vector, or "all" selector.
optionsAnyVariadic—Optional dimension and missing-value arguments.

Returns

NameTypeDescription
YNumericArrayComputed statistic.

Errors

IdentifierWhenMessage
RunMat:rms:InvalidArgumentInputs, flags, dimensions, or options are malformed.descriptive statistics: invalid argument
RunMat:rms:InternalInternal tensor conversion or allocation fails.descriptive statistics: internal error

How rms works

  • NaNs are included by default.
  • "omitnan" skips NaNs in each slice; empty slices return NaN.
  • Logical and integer inputs are promoted to double precision before reduction.
  • Complex inputs are reduced using magnitude.

Example

Root mean square of a vector

r = rms([1 2 4], "all")

Using rms with coding agents

Open a RunMat example with live inputs, then ask the agent to explain how rms changes the result.

Run a small rms example, explain the result, then change one input and compare the output.

FAQ

Is rms the same as norm divided by sqrt(n)?⌄

For a vector without omitted values, yes: rms(x) equals norm(x)/sqrt(numel(x)).

About RunMat

RunMat is an open-source runtime that executes MATLAB-syntax code blazing on any GPU. It is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.

  • RunMat automatically optimizes your math for GPU execution on Apple, Nvidia, and AMD hardware. No code changes needed. Simulations that took hours now take minutes.
  • Start running code in seconds. RunMat runs in the browser, on the desktop, or from the CLI. No license server, no IT ticket.
